Using and in Conversational Interaction

This paper presents work on “and” discussing it from both a grammatical and an interactive viewpoint. It represents part of a larger concern for reconciling the fields of linguistics and conversation analysis, embarking into the arena of what has been termed “interactional grammar.” Coming from a perspective that takes grammar as patterning that emerges from the raw experience of human interaction, I am interested in both the patterns that emerge and the ways that those patterns are employed by speakers as interactional resources. Current projects include work on interactional grammar in Mandarin Chinese and an examination of gesture as an interactive resource, particularly for emphatic self-reference.
