Syntactic and Prosodic Practices For Cohesion in Series of Three-part Sequences in Classroom Talk

This paper is reflects my interests in classroom discourse and the grammar of interaction. The analyses of talk in several public high school classrooms show the order making accomplished in a phenomenon which has been called “recitation” by some classroom discourse researchers. These recitation episodes are shown to consist of activity segments which result from series of three part exchanges produced cohesively through syntactic, semantic, and prosodic practices.

I am an Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics at Portland State University and a researcher at NCSALL’s National Labsite for Adult ESOL (www.labschool.pdx.edu). My current research uses methods from conversation analysis with longitudinal data focusing on language learners’ development of conversational practices for dyadic interaction in the classroom.
