Premeeting Talk: An Organizationally Crucial Form of Talk
This article grew out of Julien Mirivel’s masters’ thesis under the supervision of Karen Tracy. Both authors have been interested in the study of discourse in a range of institutional settings. Julien is working on his dissertation project which involves blending analysis of videotaped encounters between plastic surgeons and patients with interviews with the patients and clinical staff. He is also interested in advice-giving sequences in martial arts training and television talk shows. Karen Tracy studies identity-work in a range of institutional sites and has been particularly interested in the discourse of public meetings.
Karen Tracy is Professor and Julien Mirivel is a doctoral student in the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
