Managing the Transitions between Talk and Silence in the Academic Monologue
Johanna Rendle-Short lectures in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at the Australian National University. She recently completed her PhD, entitled 'Talk and Action in the Computer Science Seminar’. Johanna is interested in all aspects of interaction, especially nonverbal interaction. Her Conversation Analytic work has focussed on situated talk and technology, as well as the use of discourse markers in institutional talk and in everyday conversation. She is also interested in Applied CA, particularly with reference to speakers with communicative impairment and to non-native speakers of English.
This current study on the transition from talk to silence in the academic monologue is part of her PhD which examined the way in which presenters of the academic monologue use talk and action to interact with the audience and tools such as computers, overhead projectors and slides.
